A common machine language for all machine tools.
Agathon will participate in the umati Connectivity Showcase at the EMO 2019 in Hannover, Germany. This showcase connects different machine tools, equipped with controls from different manufacturers, with a higher-level IT ecosystem. Therefore the individual machines are each equipped with an umati interface. This also applies to the grinding machines exhibited by Agathon.
EMO visitors will get information about umati at any of the participants’ booths and will be offered a hands-on experience via a white-label dashboard. The dashboard offers data of each individual machine connected through umati. The dashboard is easily accessible through any web browser with individual QR codes offering weblinks at each machine. In this way, the visitor gets an idea of what the umati interface is capable of doing.
umati is an initiative of the Association of German Machine Tool Builders (VDW), which has set itself the goal to create a common machine language. As part of this initiative, a globally uniform interface will be developed on the basis of the UPC UA protocol, which will enable the secure and easy integration of different machine tools and systems into customer and user-specific IT ecosystems (MES, ERP, Cloud, etc.). The challenge is to overcome the current growth of proprietary solutions that makes it difficult to expand and promote industry 4.0 solutions. For this reason, a large number of international associations, research institutes and manufacturers of machines, components and control systems are involved in this initiative. umati is an acronym and stands for “universal machine tool interface”.
